The elimination of extreme poverty has been a dream of the Chinese nation for thousands of years. Since the Communist Party of China’s 18th National Congress, the Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core has placed poverty alleviation in a prominent position in national governance, taken poverty alleviation as the bottom-line task of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, and organized and launched a massive people’s war to fight against poverty. After more than eight years of continuous struggle, China has achieved the goal of eliminating absolute poverty in the new era as scheduled. By current standards, all the 98.99 million rural poor living below the current poverty line have been out of poverty, as well as all the 832 counties and 128,000 villages removed from the poverty list. Overall, regional poverty no longer exists.
China has completed the arduous task of eliminating extreme poverty – an outstanding and historic achievement. China has achieved the goal of poverty alleviation in the new era as scheduled, not only laying solid foundations for fulfilling the First Centenary Goal, but also contributing Chinese insight and input to the cause of global poverty reduction. In the process of winning the battle against poverty, localities have focused on the key factors that cause poverty or lead people to slip back into poverty, such as people facing difficulties with serious illnesses, disability, access to education, employment, natural disasters, lack of security in drinking water and housing, etc., accelerated the construction of basic public service systems, improved the level of public services in the social field, and fully enhanced the risk-resilient ability of the poor popula tion. These measures have not only created a basic safety net for the people who are out of poverty, but also created endogenous development power for areas that have shaken off poverty.
